The Central Maryland Transportation Alliance (CMTA) is a new organization formed by a coalition of area business and nonprofit leaders dedicated to improving travel efficiency within Central Maryland – Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Carroll, Harford, & Howard Counties, and Baltimore City. As advocates for the development and implementation of a comprehensive and innovative transportation plan, CMTA acts as a convener of diverse interests; advisor to city, county, state, and federal officials; and coordinator of advocacy efforts for short and long term strategies, with the necessary regional, state, and federal funding, to implement transportation improvements.

The Vision
A thriving Metropolitan area which boasts an array of convenient transportation options, including a coordinated system of highways and interconnected mass transit options to allow all citizens to move efficiently throughout the region.

The Challenge
Growing gridlock is stymieing economic growth, polluting our air and water, heating the atmosphere, and limiting access to jobs, education, and retail and entertainment opportunities.

The Opportunity
By taking coordinated action now, Central Maryland still has time to create a vibrant transportation future before the type of crisis faced by other cities around the globe.Central Maryland can be an outstanding model of how to “do it right.”

  • CMTA Long Term Goal: To create a world class transportation system for Central Maryland by 2030
  • CMTA Near-Term Goal: Build public understanding and support for the 2030 goal while implementing immediate improvements to the existing system.
    The Need

The Central Maryland region is fortunate in having numerous strengths that are the envy of regions nationwide: an educated workforce, strong business sectors with growth potential such as biotechnology, high technology, tourism, financial services to name a few. Central Maryland’s quality of life ranks high nationwide, with easy access to mountains, the ocean, good private, and improving public schools, higher education and more. At the same time, our region is growing in unsustainable patterns that will choke the region’s economic growth if allowed to continue without better planning.

R3=E3

All project, proposals, and partnerships advanced by the CMTA must pass the R3=E3 decision matrix. They must be regional, rapid, and reliable transit and transportation initiatives that result in economic growth, equitable access, and environmental protection.
